Composting has always been a way to boost nutrients in your gardens and a great way to reduce waste heading to your local landfill. By composting properly, you're reducing the amount of methane emissions heading to our atmosphere plus giving back to your soil and the decomposers that live within. Over time, we have forgotten how to compost properly and the focus has shifted from increasing oxygen to time saving with inventions like the common day compost rollers found at hardware stores (no, we are not fans of those hot boxes). This is resulting in smelly, burnt, ineffective compost and the spreading of plant diseases and weed seeds. Because of these struggles, composting is becoming a chore which is avoided and homegrowers are forced to purchase large loads or bagged compost/manure, many times wasting their money on filler with claims of nutrients (nutrients move and leech out of these products overtime, without necessary oxygen there is nothing to renew these nutrients so usually these bags are mostly sand and broken down material).
Properly composted soil is created using a simple ratio of browns, greens and what we like to call fire starters (Cultivated Starter Mix is our own blend of fire) which will help compost reach proper seed and germ killing temperatures at a safe rate. Once your compost reaches that sweet spot of seed killing temperature (170 F), it then needs to be taken apart and reassembled moving the hot centre and placing it on the bottom to cool and oxygenate and moving the cool top into the middle to heat up. This typically takes 3 weeks and 2 “take aparts” (realistically, a homegrower sized batch that our Living Soil Starter Kit will create takes about 4-5 hours over 3 weeks). If monitored correctly, kept to proper moisture level and allowed to stay oxygenated you are left with compost which is filled with nutrients without worry of weeds or disease spread. This material is not fully broken down like the filler you find in bags, this is still decomposing which is what calls all the worms to your yard! They’ll work at breaking this down further for you after it’s applied to your flower bed, lawn or veggie garden. The best part is, if you took a microscope and peered into your newly created soil you would see that you also created life! You grew thousands of diverse microbes ready and willing to break down soil particles to release those hard to reach nutrients that your plants need!
Two rural Moms on a soil saving mission
Plants, like us, require nutrients to thrive. When there is access to the nutrients needed, plants are hardier, deter pests and have higher harvest nutritional value. Unfortunately, these nutrients are sometimes locked within soil particles and plants can't absorb them.
Microbes, like beneficial fungi and bacteria, release these nutrients into a form that plants can readily uptake. When there is a healthy EcoSystem below the soil, fewer additives are required - saving you time and money!
Through harvesting and current gardening methods, these microscopic communities can become stressed missing important parts of their food-chain. This is why incorporating Our Eco System into your gardening program can re-boot your garden and increase your food value!
This company was founded because environmentally friendly products either didn't work, cost too much or were too labor intensive. We develop our products with the client in mind; saving time and money plus, growing while improving the earth.
